No anti-virus program is perfect.

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

No anti-virus program is perfect by itself. Someone asked me if I thought that they were protected from everything with their current protection. I explained to them the same thing that I have been questioned a thousand times before. That there is no one perfect program that will protect you from everything you will need at least one other application and to be conscious of what you are doing.

after talking to at least a couple hundred people a week on what is working and not working for them when it comes to protection of there computer, most end users don’t install anything until its too late. The cost of a Anti-virus and Mal-ware program seems like a tenth of what they are going to pay to get access to their information.  I hate to say thing but alot of people out there are like the ostrich who sticks his head in the sand… and when they find a virus on there computer /or are unable to access the Internet because they downloaded the latest “Trojan” or “worm exploit” and it has blocked their Internet access.

I have talked to a lot of folks that are still in shock when they realize that they have just lost the contents of their computer and have no way of retrieving that info. The average computer Guru can help but he is going to charge anywhere from $50 to $100 per hour to extract info and get the computer back up and running. It just seems that $50 they could spend on protection is better spent than the money that is spent to retrieve what was already there.  The answer here is to be preventive about the possibility of getting a virus or a worm/trojan by getting software and backing up your data on the computer.

That being said There are great anti-virus / anti-malware programs out there, some of these programs cost money and some are considered freeware and or open source. Take some time to look these programs up (I have included a couple here for later) and make sure that you are getting a anti-virus application and a malware scanner. will be back shortly to update.

Using XAMPP for a pre-production webserver

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

I have been playing around XAMPP for the last week seriously and have installed on a linux box a couple of time but it failed too many times due to some constraints between the xampp application and the MySQL data base that was already created on the linux box. XAMPP is great for testing it is a fast install and minimal configuration its just not ready for secure enterprises and connections. So I moved it to a windows enviroment and now use it for a localized test server.  I was a little confused at first on how it adapts to local network on a Windows network.

This will give me a webserver that will be able to run php and MySQL applications, not to mention that I am running an Apache2 server, and the production server is Apache2. The local network is available from http://localhost, once you install XAMPP it calls out to the local host which will still come up but there is a redirect to the /xampp/htdocs/xampp file path. Once that was figured out then it was a piece of cake. I am attempting to move all my dreamweaver folders to the same file path /xampp/htdocs/xampp file path so I can test webpages on the xampp server. once I figure that it will save time on production and testing the site or pages.

The XAMPP webserver  gives you a taste of what a full service Apache web server is like.
